| The only way for the sport of muzzleloading to grow is to promote it to as many people as possible. Kaw Valley Muzzleloaders has always participated in area scouting events, outdoor programs and other youth events. However they knew that a shooting club has to do more if they want to really make a difference. In September of 1998 they went one step farther by organizing and hosting the first National Rifle Association Muzzleloading Shooting Sports Camp. This camp was the very first of its kind anywhere in the country and was such a huge success that they decided to hold it again. The 1999 camp was even better so it has now become an annual Kaw Valley event. In 2002 Kaw Valley decided their camp was self supporting and dropped the NRA program. They felt funding from the NRA program would be put to better use elsewhere. Kaw Valley must acknowledge that these camps could not be possible without several generous grants from the Friends of NRA and the NRA Foundation. |

Camp Objectives-
Introduce new people to the Shooting Sports
Let them experience the Shooting Sports in an inexpensive manor
Encourage woman, youth and family participation
Provide a safe structured environment, yet a fun and enjoyable atmosphere
Offer a weekend of camping and family entertainment, all revolving around a
shooting event |

To accomplish these objectives we geared the camp strictly toward the beginning shooter or muzzleloader. Absolutely no previous shooting experience is required. Kaw Valley provides all of the instructors as well as all of the firearms and supplies. Participants learn about the early mountain mans way of life, how to start a fire using flint & steel, how to throw a knife and tomahawk and the basics of safely loading and shooting a muzzleloading firearm.
The camp is a 2-day, 2-night event. While camping is not required it does add to the overall fellowship of the event. The camp is open to everyone and has brought in participants of all ages as well as many mother/daughter and father/son teams. All participants receive a KVM camp T-shirt, certificate of attendance and additional prizes for their shooting skills. |
